Swimming stroke efficiency explained

· Updated Sep 28, 2026

Efficiency is a relationship, not one number

Swimming efficiency describes how speed relates to stroke rate, distance per stroke, body position and energy cost. No single stroke count can define efficiency for every swimmer.

Useful descriptive metrics

Stroke count, stroke rate, distance per stroke, split times and velocity can help explain how a swimmer changes through a race. The value comes from the relationship between them, not from chasing the lowest possible stroke count.

Race context matters

An efficient 50m sprint may look very different from an efficient 1500m race. Higher tempo can be appropriate in sprinting, while sustainable rhythm matters more over distance.

World Aquatics points are different

World Aquatics points compare performances across events using annually updated base times. They are a performance-comparison tool, not a direct measure of technical stroke efficiency.
