One-handed vs two-handed backhand explained
What a backhand is
The backhand is a groundstroke played on the side opposite the racket hand. Elite players use both one-handed and two-handed versions.
One-handed and two-handed
A one-handed backhand offers a different reach and swing structure from a two-handed backhand. Neither is universally superior; choice depends on technique and player context.
Topspin backhand
Topspin backhands use forward and upward racket movement to shape ball flight and bounce, helping players rally with margin over the net.
Slice backhand
A slice uses backspin and typically produces a lower trajectory and different bounce. It can be used defensively, to change rhythm or to approach the net.
Tactical variation
Backhands can be directed cross-court, down the line or through the middle. Shot selection depends on balance, incoming ball and court position.
Coaching boundary
Technique varies by player. This overview is descriptive and does not prescribe a medically 'safe' backhand or guarantee performance improvement.
