Tennis forehand explained
What a forehand is
A forehand is a groundstroke played on the racket-hand side of the body and is one of the basic building blocks of baseline tennis.
Contact and preparation
Players prepare the racket, move into position and strike the ball in front of the body. Exact grip and swing shape vary with coaching style and player preference.
Flat and topspin forehands
A flatter forehand sends the ball on a more direct trajectory, while topspin changes flight and bounce. Players use both depending on height, position and tactical intent.
Direction and court position
Forehands can be played cross-court, down the line or inside-out. Direction changes risk, recovery position and the space available to the opponent.
Common misunderstanding
There is no single professional forehand model that every player should copy. Body proportions, timing and tactical identity produce legitimate variation.
