Tennis return of serve explained

· Updated Sep 28, 2026

What the return is

The return is the receiver's first shot after a legal serve. It can be used simply to start the rally or more aggressively to pressure the server.

Readiness matters

The receiver must play to the reasonable pace of the server. A receiver who attempts a return is considered ready under the rules.

When the receiver is not ready

If the receiver is clearly not ready, the serve should not be treated as a fault simply because it lands out. Current rules govern how such situations are handled.

Position and reaction

Return position depends on serve pace, spin, court surface and player preference. Moving forward or farther back changes available time and court geometry.

Tactical options

Returns can be blocked, driven, chipped or redirected. The choice depends on the incoming ball and match context rather than one universal technique.

Coaching boundary

This is descriptive tennis guidance, not a guarantee of improved reaction time or performance. Individual coaching can adapt technique to the player.
