Tennis serve explained

· Updated Sep 28, 2026

What the serve starts

The serve begins each point. The server must deliver the ball from the correct side and should not start until the receiver is ready.

First and second serve

A first-service fault does not usually end the point. The player receives a second serve; two consecutive service faults lose the point.

Service lets

A valid service let is replayed and does not count as one of the player's service attempts. Current competition rules determine the exact application.

Placement and variety

Players can vary direction, spin and pace to create different patterns. These are tactical choices rather than guaranteed ways to win points.

Serving rhythm

A reliable serve depends on repeatable timing and decision-making. Coaching should progress gradually instead of chasing maximum pace at the expense of control.
