Topspin and slice in tennis explained
Two different spin families
Topspin and slice/backspin change how the ball travels and bounces. They are different tactical tools rather than competing definitions of the 'correct' stroke.
Topspin
Topspin makes the ball rotate forward, typically helping it dip into the court and bounce higher after contact with the surface.
Slice and backspin
Slice uses backspin and usually keeps the trajectory lower, with a different bounce and pace profile from topspin.
Tactical use
Players can use topspin to create margin, angles or heavy bounce and slice to change rhythm, defend or keep the ball lower. Context determines the choice.
Not every ball needs maximum spin
Flat, topspin and slice all have roles. Good shot selection depends on balance, incoming ball, target and court position rather than one universal preference.
Coaching boundary
This article explains spin descriptively and does not promise a particular spin style will improve performance or prevent injury.
